YESTERDAYS BLACK MALE: PFC WILLIAM THOMPSON

On this day in 1951 a year after his death by an enemy gernade Private First Class (PFC) William H. Thompson became the first African American since the Spanish-American war to be awarded the Purple Heart and Medal of Honor, the highest award given to a military solider for bravery. He was 22 years old.
