GARRETT MORGAN USES HIS INVENTION “THE GAS MASK” TO RESCUE WORKERS IN SMOKE FILLED TUNNEL. In 1916 at around 10pm Inventor Garrett Morgan was called by local authorities in Cleveland OH for help in using his Gas Mask to rescue workers trapped in a tunnel filled with gas. Garrett along with his brother Frank alone used their gas masks to rescue over 20 workers as well as recovering several dead bodies. Garrett and Frank were never recognized for their heroic efforts. An award medal as well as a cash prize of $500 were given to the white men who helped them instead. Garrett Morgan also invented the traffic light.
