WILLIAM HOOPER COUNCILL’S LETTER TO WYPIPO
On this day November 28,1901 professor William Hooper Councill penned his famed open letter to the White people of America in response to the continued racism towards blacks during Reconstruction after the Civil War and the Emancipation.
Councill, who was born a slave grew up in Fayetteville NC and taken to Huntsville, Alabama by slave traders where he witnessed 2 of his brothers sold off to never be heard from again.
After the Civil war he attended a school set up by the “Freedmans Bureau” an agency of the US war department that provided food, clothing, etc; for refugees and former slaves. He started teaching and eventually became the 1st Black to teach Black students.
Councill went on to become the first president of Huntsville Normal High school when grew to become Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical university (A&M)
