On this day, April 23 1856, American Inventor Granville Tailer Woods was born. Self taught since the age of 10, Woods held some 50 patents and was the 1st person of African decent in the Americas to be a mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War.

Among his inventions are the overhead electric conducting lines and the tunnels for underground subways and the “Telegraphony” a device combining the telegraph and telephone, essentially tech used to inspire voicemails & answering machines.
