UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND
On this day April 24, 1944 activist William Trent, Tuskegee institute president Frederick D. Patterson and Mary McCloud Bethune founded the United Negro College Fund to support HBCUs and underprivileged Black students. Trent himself started out by raising $78M to make Historically Black colleges and universities strong learning institutions. They would incorporate a day later.
Today the UNCF is the nations largest and most effective minority education organization. 10,000 scholarships are awarded each year totalling over $100M and $25M was raised for Emergency Student Aid.
As their slogan says “A mind is a terrible thing to waste!”
