ROBERT C. MAYNARD
On this day April 30th, 1983 editor of the Oakland Tribune, Robert c. Maynard purchased the paper becoming the 1st African American to own a major News publication. He turned the struggling paper around making it a 1990 Pulitzer prize-winning journal.
One of 6 children to Barbados immigrants Maynard dropped out of school at 16 to pursue his writing career quickly becoming friends with the likes of Langston Hughes and James Baldwin.
In 1977 he co founded the Robert C. Maynard institute for journalism education, which trains young African Americans in journalism.
