On this day June 5, 1894 Teacher, Inventor and Farmer George Washington Murray patented……..
The Cotton Chopper (#520,888)
The Planter (#520,887)
The Fertilizer Distributor (#520,889)
Years later Murray would go on to become a United States Congressman for the state of South Carolina as a member of the Republican party from 1893 to 1897.
The former Teacher of 15 years and Inventor then went on to be known as a leader, organizing for the Colored Farmers Alliance (CFA) and the Colored Workers Alliance (CWA) spreading the notion of “Black Populism” a mode of political thought proposing that the common people were being exploited by the privileged. Their goal was to unite the people against the elite and their followers.
