Nelson Mandela, the lawyer born in British South Africa got into politics when the national party instituted apartheid which granted special privaledges to it’s white citizens over the indigenous Blacks.

After years of strife with the racist government Mandela and some of his African National Congress (ANC) members were charged with sabotage and sentenced to life in prison.

After serving 27 years in prison the then President released Mandela in 1990 for fear of a racial Civil War and together Mandela led his ANC to victory in capturing the presidency in 1994 ultimately ending British rule in South Africa.
